By 1920, Henry Ford was widely recognized by the public, and he and his wife Clara found it increasingly difficult to travel with privacy. Their solution? A private railroad car that they named “Fair Lane.”
Custom built by The Pullman Company, the car has accommodations for eight ─ including four private rooms, an observation lounge, a dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. Between 1921 and 1942, the Fords and their family used Fair Lane for over 400 trips, many business-related, but also regular journeys to their winter home in Florida (and later Georgia), and their summer home in northern Michigan.
Today, Fair Lane is on display in Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, and on rare special occasions it takes a spin around the Weiser Railroad in Greenfield Village.
