Background Context: On May 2nd 1974, Sophie's younger siblings Edd and Molly were killed in a car crash caused by an intoxicated driver, Felix. Days later, at the funeral, Sophie was in visible shock. Afterward, unlike her parents Jack and Rosemary — who fell into open, visible grief (Rosemary spiralling into depression, disappearing into her art) — Jack comforts Sophie as she struggles to cope with her siblings' deaths, telling her that what she's feeling is completely normal, all while putting on a brave face and pretending he's strong enough to handle it himself.
