The Quest for Groove
The easiest way to drum a Shuffle beat on a pad controller
updated
Yamaha recently came out with the FGDP-30 and FGDP-50. Two devices that are made specifically for finger drumming, with onboard sounds, an onboard speaker, running on battery power and rocking an innovative and at the same time intuitive pad layout. I ofcourse got my hands on both FGDP devices ASAP and present my findings in this video.

Waves recently released this plugin that can "detect the key of the song you're working on", and when I saw the ad for this new plugin it really rubbed me the wrong way. One could say it brought out the worst in me for a moment. In this video I try and explore that feeling, what it "actually" is, where it comes from and how to make it go away...

I've lived the artist life for about 15 years before finally getting an office job three years ago (at the age of 33). In this video I'm exploring everything that happened up until that point, leading to some interesting discoveries about the 'dangers' of moderate success and whether it's possible to go back to being a starving artist once you've finally know what money smells like...

**Lyrics**:
Hello, maybe you don’t know me
Why don’t you have a seat, I’m making macaroni because
I just gave up my dreams, so I’m cooking something simple tonight
You might, think that I’m dramatic
That I’ll just keep making music from my attic but I
Now see, things they aren’t static
And I gotta make the fluids flow right
'Cause that's life boy
You think that you’re winning
But you’re at the beginning of a massive decline
That’s right boy
It won’t get any better
You think you can still get there but you ran out of time
You could, say that I'm a quitter.
That I never had what it takes and now I'm bitter but I
Now see, life is not a twitter stream of endless inspirational quotes
Good luck, following your passion
I’ll cheer you when you’re climbing and catch you when you’re crashing because
I will always show compassion to a fellow former fool down the road
'Cause that’s life boy
You think that you are smarter
But just by running harder you won’t get very far
That’s right boy
Go write yourself a haiku
And think that girls will like you cause you play the guitar
'Cause that’s life boy
I recognize the tension
The thinking ‘bout your pension makes you burst into tears
That’s right boy
I know how hard this stuff is…
So see you at the office in a couple of years

The ESI or Artesia Pro Xjam pad controller delivers quality in a small package. This is the first controller in over a year that gets a spot on my recommended pad controllers list, so that says something! It is not perfect though, so you better watch the video if you want to know exactly what the deal is with this thing.

The super responsive pads of a Maschine mk3 will slowly but surely become a little less sensitive over time. I'm a sensitive guy, who likes to play with feelings and emotion, so obviously I had to see if I could fix the problem now that it popped up again. I opened the thing up (for the first time ever) to see if replacing the pad sensor sheet with a new one from mpcstuff.com would work...

If you're thinking about learning finger drumming, you might want to know what such journey will more or less look like before you commit to actually putting in all that hard work over a long period of time. In this video I tried to compress multiple years of diligent finger drumming practice into this one story that explains how I would do things if I started from the beginning and what to expect.

While playing a solid groove is already hard enough as it is by itself, playing a solid groove, moving into a solid fill and then back into a solid groove while keeping everything flowing and consistent is a huge challenge. In this video I share the most important thing you should work on in order to slowly but surely get rid of this problem and get your beats and fills flowing like never before. Long before I got into finger drumming, I was a guitar player. A pretty fanatical one to say the least. I went to the conservatory, practiced my butt off for many years and then... I stopped practicing. In this video I'll explain why that happened but more importantly, I'll tell you how finger drumming turned out to be a huge benefit to my guitar playing, even though I don't practice guitar at all anymore. Enjoy!

After Akai announced the release of their new MPC studio mk2 last week, which clearly has the Maschine mikro mk3 in its crosshairs, I had to get myself one right away. To test the pads, and of course to compare it to the mikro mk3, since that unit is my main recommendation for finger drumming at this time. I had to know if this new MPC device could be a viable alternative. Spoiler: it sort of is, but I'm hesitant to recommend it, which is why I made this video to explain.

I realised last month that I've been finger drumming for 7 years now. Seven years! It felt like a good time to both celebrate as well as assess my progress. And what better way to do both of those things than making a song. I started off by improvising a beat and then using that as the foundation to build all the other parts. I wrote lyrics the next day and then spent a couple of days in between my 'regular' work mixing and tweaking and adding 'sauce' to the whole thing. I'm happy with the result and will be releasing the song as the very first song under my name "Robert Mathijs" on all streaming platforms. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. Onward to the next seven years!

Lyrics
Sometimes it's easy but more often it is hard
It might go fast or take a long time baby
You might feel bad about yourself when you start
Might let those voices in your head tear you apart
Now take a deep breath, start counting 1 2 3
Come to terms with the fact, this' how things have to be
Who am I, who are you, what's the meaning of life and will go we to heaven?
Just park those thoughts, count 4 5 6 until you get to 7
The road is windy, destination unknown
And it might feel you took a detour lately
As if you're still a little child on it's own
That's lost and scared because it's far away from home
Just take a deep breath, start counting 1 2 3 (deep voice slow count: 1...2...3...)
Come to terms with the fact, this' how things got to be
What's my purpose on earth and will go I to heaven?
Just let it go, 'cause will know once you count up to 7.
Now take a deep breath, start counting 1 2 3
Come to terms with the fact, this' how things have to be
Who am I, who are you, what's the meaning of life and will go we to heaven?
Don't you worry 'bout that, count 4 5 6 until you get to 7
Seven hours, seven days, seven weeks, seven months, seven years
Time flies when you're having fun, so what you waiting for son?
Seven hours, seven days, seven weeks, seven months, seven years
Don't let the time pass you by, come on and learn how to fly

Here's a truth bomb for ya: If you truly want to improve your timing and groove, 'regular' metronome practice is not gonna cut it. The reason for this is that most musicians who practice with a metronome the traditional way get stuck in some sort of trap where they 'need' the metronome to be there in order for them to play in time, whereas the true development of timing and groove comes from within ourselves. That's where the exercises provided in the "Gap Click" app come in ( https://www.gapclick.app ) It's basically a metronome on steroids, designed to help you train your own inner clock and become a true master of time. In this video I'll walk you trought the app and show you some stuff that I've been doing with it over the past months.

Limitations breed creativity, so I asked my girlfriend to pick a genre and a topic for the next song that I was going to make, and boy did she turn it into a challenge... A disco song about storms? Seriously? Here's what I came up with.

Lyrics
======
Pick up the pace cause shit is goin' down
Gotta get your butt right outta here
Let's pack our bags and stop for gas downtown
Then hit the road and disappear
I see the clouds form in the sky
Blocking the light from reaching you and I
I feel a breeze is pickin' up
And I'm afraid that it won't stop, baby can't you,
Oh baby can't you see?
A storm is headed right for you and me.
I've had this feeling now for quite some time
This feeling that we gotta go
You seemed to act like everything was fine
That's why I never told you so
But when I look into your eyes
I realise you're not at all surprised
You say it's gonna be alright if we just hold each other.... but baby, I know that you know that we just might...
we might not even make it through the night.
A breeze is blowing
It's chilling to the bone
So turn the heat up higher
Make sure you're not alone
A storm is comin'
So turn them flames up high
And let your fiery passion
Rise up into the sky

The Presonus Atom and Novation Launchpad are still missing the feature where you can change the note value of the pads in midi mode. In this video I'm gonna talk about why this sucks and why at the same time it's not going to be a problem for most people.

- The issue I mention with cc notes on the Boppad is no longer there so that's great!
- Keith McMillen informed me about The QuNeo's new MPE support (for example for use with Ableton Live 11). Might be interesting for more experimental ways of playing. For finger drumming the way I do on this channel (hitting multiple pads at the same time with the same hand) I still wouldn't recommend it.
Check out my up to date recommendations here (the blog is actually better than the kit.com page nowadays):

It has all the qualities of a classic gameboy tune:
- It sounds like crap
