We begin by looking at the specific case of 2 colours, where we are trying to guarantee a pattern of 3 beads of the same colour which are equally spaced. This is then generalised to n colours, and a pattern of length k, which is the statement of Van der Waerden's Theorem.
The case of 3 colours (n=3), and arithmetic progressions of length 3 (k=3), is then shown to be true via a proof by construction. The length of chain used in the proof is much larger than the minimum required, but as the theorem only requires the existence of a sufficiently long chain, our proof suffices.
The question of finding the minimum length of chain for specific cases of n colours, and arithmetic progression length k, remains an unsolved problem apart from in a handful of cases.

The model begins by considering the mass flux through a small 2D segment of the glacier. Taking the limit as the size of the segment tends to zero, we arrive at the conservation of mass equation given in terms of the glacier height, the mass flux of ice, and the accumulation rate.
To determine an equation for the mass flux we use at the Navier-Stokes momentum equation and apply conditions for a non-Newtonian fluid. Due to the small Reynolds Number we are able to neglect the inertial terms, and solve the resulting system for the stress.
Finally, we apply Glen's Flow Law to obtain the flux in terms of the glacier height. Substituting this back into the mass equation gives the final governing equation in the form of a nonlinear wave equation.

The video begins with a history of Jantar Mantar in Jaipur, and a tour of the many instruments used for astronomical measurements. We then look at the history of heliocentrism and the begin an exploration of the work of Aristarchus.
The first calculation relates to the relative distances of the Sun and the Moon from the Earth. Using simple trigonometry at a 'Half-Moon' we obtain the same estimates for the distances as Aristarchus.
The second calculation is more involved and looks at the relative sizes of the Sun and Moon in comparison to the Earth. This requires the use of the properties of similar triangles during a Lunar Eclipse. We also use the fact that during a total eclipse, the sun and moon take up the same proportion of the sky, which means the ratios of their sizes relative to the Earth, is the same as that of their distances from Earth.
Finally, we end with a discussion of the translation of the work of Aristarchus and how his calculations may in fact have been much more accurate than first thought...

The video was inspired by an article discussing the 8-sided nature of the Great Pyramid of Giza, and how the concavity would affect its volume. This is explored in the third part of the video via a calculation of the volume of a square-based pyramid, and how that would be modified for a step-pyramid such as the Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara.
The first part of the video looks at the number system of the Ancient Egyptians, including the meaning of the hieroglyphs and how they multiplied numbers together using a method of continuous doubling (or binary). Tom visits the wall at Karnak Temple which contains carvings of the numbers.
The second part of the video explores the Ancient Egyptian Festival Calendar and the division of the year into 3 seasons of 120 days. Tom visits Kom Ombo temple which contains the only known example of hieroglyphs detailing the transition to the new year.
The third and final part of the video looks more closely at the architecture of tombs such as the Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings. Tom visits both sites, as well as the ancient city of Saqqara. The volume of a standard square-based pyramid is calculated and compared to that of a step pyramid, with a rather surprising result.

This exciting competition asks students of all ages and abilities to explain their favourite mathematical topic in an essay aimed at a non-specialist audience. Originally launched in 2020 as a partnership between Tom Rocks Maths and St Edmund Hall, the competition aims to provide the participants with the opportunity to communicate complex ideas in an understandable manner, and to encourage them to engage with maths beyond any curriculum.
There are no eligibility requirements, all you need is a passion for maths and a flair for writing to participate! The closing date is Monday 1st April 2024 and the showcase of entries (including the announcement of the winners) will take place throughout summer 2024.
There are two strands of entry:
1. Under 18's (student); and
2. Over 18's (adult)
Please note: A ‘student' is defined as anyone who is still studying full-time at school or college, university students fall into the ‘adult’' category.
There is no word limit for the essays, but as a guideline 1000-2000 words is sufficient. All entries must be submitted using the online form as PDF or Microsoft Word documents.

The student prizewinner will receive a cash prize of £100 alongside the publication of their winning essay on the University website.

Using a mathematical formula which gives the top speed of a land-based animal, we use the tools of calculus to determine the ideal mass to maximise velocity. Too small and the animal does not have enough capacity to go quickly, but too big and it cannot accelerate quickly enough to reach its theoretical maximum speed. The location of the 'sweet spot' in the middle is found by calculating the turning point of the velocity function. The solution is then applied to dinosaurs to determine which is the fastest.

The story begins in the 1960's and Martin's early work in cryptography at IBM Research. He meets Whitfield Diffie and in 1976 the Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange is created - allowing information to be sent securely online. As the field of cryptography is being developed, Martin faces opposition from the National Security Agency (NSA), but he refuses to back down. He explains his reasons for this, and how it was finally resolved.
In the 1980's Martin switched his focus to the nuclear threat and began working on educating the public on the risk of nuclear annihilation. More information can be found on his website: http://nuclearrisk.org

The ACM A.M. Turing Award is an annual prize given by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to "an individual selected for contributions of a technical nature made to the computing community". The Turing Award is recognized as the "highest distinction in computer science" and "Nobel Prize of Computing". The award is named after Alan Mathison Turing, mathematician and reader in mathematics at the University of Manchester. From 2007 to 2013, the award was accompanied by a prize of US$250,000. Effective 2014, the funding level has been increased to US$1 million, i.e. four times the previous amount
Martin Hellman received the Turing Award in 2015 along with Whitfield Diffie for inventing and promulgating both asymmetric public-key cryptography, including its application to digital signatures, and a practical cryptographic key-exchange method.

Noga begins with his recollection of being awarded the Shaw Prize in Mathematics, and the recent award ceremony in Hong Kong. He then explains how the interdisciplinary nature of his work has led to over 600 publications, including work in Biology, Economics and Neuroscience. Involutes have been studied throughout history, most notably by Christian Huygens when trying to construct an accurate clock using a pendulum. They are also found in gear systems where the shape of the gears follows that of a circular involute to reduce friction and increase torque.

The Fields Medal is awarded every four years during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM). It recognizes outstanding mathematical achievement for existing work and for the promise of future achievement. Two to four medals are awarded to mathematicians who have to be of age less than forty years on January 1 of the Congress year. The Fields Medal, established in 1936 and named after the Canadian mathematician J. C. Fields, is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of mathematics and often described as the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics".
Efim Zelmanov was awarded the Fields Medal in 1994 “for the solution of the restricted Burnside problem in group theory”. Efim is the Chair Professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

The video begins with a reminder of the definition of an orthonormal set, before introducing the 3 steps of the Gram-Schmidt Process. Step 1: normalise the first vector from a linearly independent set. Step 2: subtract the projection of the first orthonormal vector from the second vector in the linearly independent set, then normalise. Step 3: repeat step 2 for each of the remaining vectors.
Step 2 is explored in more detail through a direct calculation of the inner product and an explicit example in the 2D plane, including a visualisation of the projection map.
The video ends with a fully worked example of computing an orthonormal set in the polynomial inner product space where the inner product is defined via an integral.

The Nevalinna Prize (now renamed the Abacus Medal) is awarded by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) every 4 years for outstanding contributions in Mathematical Aspects of Information Sciences. Daniel received his prize in 2010 "for smoothed analysis of Linear Programming, algorithms for graph-based codes and applications of graph theory to Numerical Computing."

The video begins with the definition of a Bilinear Form with a concrete example of the dot product on R^n. This is shown to also satisfy the criteria to be symmetric and positive definite, thus making it an Inner Product.
The concept of an Inner Product Space is then introduced as a Real Vector Space equipped with an Inner Product. A second example involving an integral over the space of real polynomials is then explored.
In the second part of the video Orthonormal Sets are introduced via a definition and then the proof of a lemma stating that any Orthonormal Set in an Inner Product Space is Linearly Independent. The video concludes with a final definition of a Sesquilinear Form and a discussion of a Complex Inner Product Space.
