The symbol is more than just a visual, it’s a representation of our mission and values: “It integrates the ‘S’ from The Shaw Prize, employs a radiant pattern inspired by natural laws, and forms a complete circle with the ‘S’ at its core, symbolising the universe. This design metaphorically encapsulates The Shaw Prize and the act of illuminating discoveries derived from the natural order. The symbol highlights the essence of The Shaw Prize and its commitment to recognising and honouring significant contributions in the scientific field.”

【The Shaw Prize in Astronomy】is awarded to
Shrinivas R Kulkarni
for his ground-breaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical objects. His contributions to time-domain astronomy culminated in the conception, construction and leadership of the Palomar Transient Factory and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Facility, which have revolutionised our understanding of the time-variable optical sky.

【The Shaw Prize in Astronomy 2023】
FRBs are among the most extreme and mysterious phenomena in astronomy: they are intense bursts of radio emission lasting only a few thousandths of a second that contain as much energy as the Sun emits over several days. The sources of the bursts are smaller than the Earth but are as far away as distant galaxies. In a seminal research paper written in 2007, Bailes, Lorimer, McLaughlin (with collaborators Narkevic and Crawford) found the first FRB; deduced many of the properties of its source, in particular its extreme distance, small size, and enormous energy; estimated the cosmic rate of production of FRBs; and highlighted their potential as cosmological probes.
The Shaw Prize in Astronomy 2023 is awarded in equal shares to Matthew Bailes, Duncan Lorimer and Maura McLaughlin for the discovery of fast radio bursts (FRBs).
【The Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2023】
The Central Dogma, a theory put forward in 1958 by Francis Crick, is the fundamental concept of life. Three crucial molecules are involved: DNA houses an organism’s genetic blueprint. The DNA genome contains the information required to produce all of an organism’s proteins. Proteins endow cells, tissues, and organisms with their forms and capabilities. Messenger RNA (mRNA) is the intermediate molecule that links DNA to proteins. Particular DNA instructions are converted into individual mRNA molecules to produce specific proteins by a process called gene transcription. Crucially, transcription of specific genes must occur at the correct times and in the correct cellular locations so that the subsets of proteins required for function are only produced when and where they are needed. The gene transcription process has four steps: (1) Initiation; (2) Pausing/Promoter Clearance; (3) Elongation; (4) Termination. In 2006, Roger Kornberg won the Nobel Prize for discoveries concerning how the enzyme called RNA Polymerase converts DNA into mRNA.
The Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2023 is awarded in equal shares to Patrick Cramer and Eva Nogales for pioneering structural biology that enabled visualisation, at the level of individual atoms, of the protein machines responsible for gene transcription, one of life’s fundamental processes. They revealed the mechanism underlying each step in gene transcription, how proper gene transcription promotes health, and how dysregulation causes disease.
【The Shaw Prize in Mathematics Sciences 2023】
The Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences 2023 is awarded in equal shares to Vladimir Drinfeld and Shing-Tung Yau, for their contributions related to mathematical physics, to arithmetic geometry, to differential geometry and to Kähler geometry.
They share an interest in mathematical physics. Drinfeld launched with Beilinson the geometric Langlands program, which, to quote Witten, has some common features with aspects of quantum field theory, and yet stems from number theory. Yau worked on mathematical problems arising from general relativity and string theory.

【The Shaw Prize in Astronomy】 is awarded in equal shares to
Matthew Bailes
Duncan Lorimer
Maura McLaughlin
for the discovery of fast radio bursts (FRBs).

【The Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine】 is awarded in equal shares to
Patrick Cramer
Eva Nogales
for pioneering structural biology that enabled visualisation, at the level of individual atoms, of the protein machines responsible for gene transcription, one of life’s fundamental processes. They revealed the mechanism underlying each step in gene transcription, how proper gene transcription promotes health, and how dysregulation causes disease.

【The Shaw Prize in Astronomy 2022】
Astrometry is a study that involves the measurement of the position, distances and motions of planets and stars. In the late 1980s, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched a ground-breaking astrometry mission, the Hipparcos mission, dedicated to such measurements. Building on the legacy of Hipparcos, the still-operating Gaia mission aims to create the largest and most precise three-dimensional map of our home, which will provide a rich harvest of ancillary astronomical results.
The Shaw Prize in Astronomy 2022 pays tribute to Professor Lennart Lindegren and Professor Michael Perryman, who have made lifetime contributions to astrometry, in particular to the conception and design of the Hipparcos and Gaia mission.
【The Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2022】
Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common severe single-gene disorders, affecting more than 80,000 people globally. Decades ago, many patients with CF could not survive into adulthood; but this is not any more today thanks to the new advances in CF therapies.
The Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2022 honours Dr Paul A Negulescu and Professor Michael J Welsh for landmark discoveries of the molecular, biomedical, and functional defects underlying CF and the identification and development of medicines that reverse those defects and can treat most people affected by this disorder.
【The Shaw Prize in Mathematics Sciences 2022】
Discrete mathematics is the part of mathematics which studies properties that can be counted. These days we often associate discrete mathematics with codes and computer science, or more recently in the development of smartphones.
Mathematical logic, which developed at the beginning of the 20th century, sets the foundations of various areas of mathematics and shaped their axiomatization. Within it, model theory studies the formal language which underlies a mathematical structure.
The Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences 2022 is awarded to Professor Noga Alon and Professor Ehud Hrushovski for their remarkable contributions to discrete mathematics and model theory with interaction notably with algebraic geometry, topology and computer sciences.
