I’ve recently been messing around with a lot of different samples of things I recorded and trimmed in Reaper and I composed this piece on Wednesday based on the one I did in March using the Nantand organ sample but slightly different and much longer.
The samples include a piano string being strummed by a spinning fidget spinner, the sample of me blowing through the read on a bicycle horn with my hand muting it a bit, one of the stacked sine wave organ samples, the sandwich container drum sample, an Irish Whistle sample,a sample from a different kalimba and a sample from a stretchy rubber noodle toy being strummed against a metal tray but only the tail end of the decay.
The fidget spinner strumming the piano string was recorded at the Pianodrome, which is a place in Granton where there are a lot of different pianos and pianos are repaired and made into other items. A lot of the structure of the building is made out of pieces of old piano and one of the things there is the string board from a piano with the strings still attached. So I spun the fidget spinner really fast and made it hit the strings, which produced the sound I used for the main melody in the first section and also for the new section that comes later in the peace.
The sample of an Irish whistle which sounds a bit like a flute is also used to play parts of the main theme after the piano samples play it. There is also another piano sample that plays an octave above the strumming one eventually in the first playing. When the variation of the main melody playys near the end, the kalimba sample plays it, splits over two octaves and then the strumming sample comes on top of them. The pizzicato plucking sound plays beneath this that was made with the rubber noodle toy.
The sound from the bicycle horn plays the bass.
