Women’s participation in politics is a fundamental part of a democratic and equal society. Women make up approximately half of the world’s population, yet they have historically been underrepresented in political institutions and decision-making structures.

Women’s Month provides an important opportunity to recognise the achievements of wo Women’s political participation is also important for younger generations. When girls see women occupying positions of authority, they are more likely to view leadership and political participation as possibilities available to them.

Female political leaders can therefore serve as role models and demonstrate that leadership is not determined by gender. Men in political leadership, reflect on the challenges they continue to experience, and encourage greater participation by women and girls in public life.
