Barton-Malow, Alexander, AECOM, Hunt Joint Venture was awarded the main contract for the fast-track demolition and reconstruction of the upper, west stand portion of Beaver Stadium at Pennsylvania State University. After a competitive bid process, environmental remediation and demolition was awarded to ISI Demolition (ISI) of White Marsh, MD. ISI, who in turn, awarded the design and explosives felling of the 165’ Press Box to Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI), of Phoenix, MD. ISI needed to get the Press Box on the ground and out of the way quickly so its high-reach and support equipment could begin to remove the balance of their scope of demolition work.
With Pennsylvania State’s winning season, the Beaver Stadium wasn’t turned over to ISI until two days after the final game, just before Christmas. Pennsylvania State quickly removed equipment to be salvaged and disconnected utilities. ISI worked around the clock, through the holidays, to complete environmental operations, separate the Press Box from the stadium to be conventionally demolished to the east, and prepare the Press Box structure for felling, per CDI’s design.

The structural configuration of the Press Box put its center of gravity close to the reaction (hinge) line that was to rotate the structure away from the stadium structure, only five feet away. CDI worked with ISI to arrange the transfer of the elevator shaft weight to the main press box structure during the explosives sequence.

CDI placed a total of 31 lbs. of explosives at 74 cut points to fell the structure on January 4th at 8:02 am, after the Nittany lion pushed the ceremonial plunger at the crowded VIP viewing area.

Vibration and air over pressure monitoring revealed levels well below regulatory limits and no damages were reported to the stadium or below grade utilities in the fall area from of the structure.

ISI removed the fallen Press Box in a day and completed their conventional demolition of the balance of their above grade demolition scope in three days. ISI expects to turn the demolition site over to their client for installation of the new foundation 20 days ahead of their original 42 day fast-track schedule.
