Explosive cyclogenesis occurs when atmospheric pressure at the center of a low-pressure system drops rapidly by 18 to 24 hPa within 24 hours or less. Often referred to as "weather bombs," these rapidly intensifying systems unleash severe weather conditions, including hurricane-strength wind gusts, enormous coastal waves, and heavy rainfall across affected regions.
Cyclogenesis describes the fundamental atmospheric process through which depressions, cyclones, and low-pressure systems take shape. When atmospheric dynamics cause this pressure drop to occur with extreme speed and intensity, the system transitions into explosive cyclogenesis. While these powerful "weather bombs" can bring intense precipitation and extreme winds, they typically pass rapidly as the system moves across regions.
