A walkthough of the Aft Engine Room, Propeller Shaft Alley, Rudder Steering Gear Room, and Propeller Box of the Queen Mary. I also have some photos of her Boiler Rooms at the end, as I was unable to get video footage this trip. The outboard propellers were driven by the Forward Engine Room, now an exhibit hall, and the inboard propellers were driven by the Aft Engine Room, which you see here. Each of the main turbines comprises of one high-pressure, two intermediate-pressure, and one low-pressure turbines working in a series. Each turbine drives a separate piston which engages the main gear wheel. No. 1 Boiler Room had 3 double-ended Scotch boilers providing auxiliary power for services. Boiler Rooms 2-5 contained 6 Yarrow Double-flow Boilers each providing the main power to the engines. The Yarrow Boilers are designed to generate steam under a working pressure of 400psi in a temperature of 700 degrees F. The Scotch Boilers are designed for a working pressure of 250psi, and supplys the superheated steam to the hotel turbo-generators.
