In this walking tour, I explore the crumbling walls, archways, and hidden corners of a place that once stood at the heart of religious life in St Albans — and uncover the history, legends, and mysteries that still cling to these ruins today.
Founded in 1140 by Geoffrey de Gorham, Sopwell began as a Benedictine nunnery for women and later expanded to include a monastery for monks. For nearly four centuries, this was a thriving spiritual community, supported by surrounding farmland and the gentle waters of the River Ver. Life here followed strict religious routines — prayer, study, and manual work — all within walls that now stand silent.
Everything changed in the 1530s during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. Sopwell Nunnery was closed, its treasures stripped away, and many of its buildings deliberately dismantled. What remains today are fragments: sections of cloister, foundations, and parts of the church that hint at the scale and importance of the complex.
But Sopwell isn’t just about documented history — it’s also a place of myth and local legend. Over the years, stories have circulated of shadowy figures moving between the ruins, unexplained sounds after dark, and ghostly apparitions believed to be former nuns or monks still bound to the site.
