Exploring Hobbiton, New Zealand – A Journey Into the Real Middle-Earth | The Shire Comes to Life

Step into the real Middle-Earth.
Join us as two brothers from Buckinghamshire travel halfway across the globe to the emerald hills of Waikato, New Zealand, where fiction turns into reality—Hobbiton, the legendary home of the Hobbits from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

In this video, we explore the history, magic, and craftsmanship behind the world’s most iconic fantasy village.

📖 A Brief Journey Through Time
Back in 1998–1999, filmmakers were searching for a real landscape that felt like ancient England. They found it on the Alexander family farm—rolling green hills, a peaceful lake, and a timeless rural charm perfect for the Shire.
By 1999, 37 Hobbit Hole facades, a mill, pathways, gardens, hedges, and even a 26-ton oak tree were built to bring Tolkien’s vision to life.

🎬 From Temporary Movie Set to Permanent Middle-Earth
Although the first version of Hobbiton was never meant to last, fate had other plans. After filming, parts of the set remained due to delays—and the magic refused to fade. When production for The Hobbit trilogy began in 2010, Hobbiton was rebuilt permanently, with incredible detail and durability.
