Cullykhan is a popular sandy bay to the west of Pennan.
On a promontory above the bay lie the remains of the Bronze Age fort. There is a car park with footpaths to the beach and the fort.
A car park reached from the road into Pennan from the west gives access to a trio of very different coastal features. For most visitors, the sheltered, sandy beach of Cullykhan Bay is the obvious highlight: small but perfectly formed. Immediately to the north, Castle Point is the site of an ancient fort. It boasts dramatic cliff scenery and excellent views east towards Pennan village, bay and headland. Cast your gaze further west from here and the gaping black mouth of Hell’s Lum (chimney) is an ominous sight: this collapsed sea cave marks the end of a tunnel that begins on the other side of Lion’s Head promontory, carved out by past storms.
Cullykhan Castle was located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and overlooking Cullykhan Bay, are the earth mound remains of the castle. The castle was constructed upon a hillfort, that had been constructed to defend the area from Viking raids. The castle was held by the Troup family in the 14th century and was also known as Fort Fiddes.
This place has been used through time as a Cliff Fort, Castle and Battery. Various ditches and ramparts can be seen as well as some stone work. Like Cleaved Head on the western side is sheer cliff face, on the eastern a natural harbour. To reach the fort a path four feet wide with severe drops either side must be walked.
Cullykhan is further east than Gardenstown, on the B9031, and is signposted as Fort Fiddes. The road leads to a car park. There are two paths one to the fort, the other to the beach. If taking children heed the warnings signposted, the cliffs are imposing. Just to the west is a natural feature called Hells Lum. Pennan, the setting for Local Hero, can be seen from the fort in the east.
