This is the second video, exploring deep Kochi with my good friend Sharla! We travelled to Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku for the first time a few weeks back, and had a great time eating tons of delicious food, exploring the area by land and sea, and even getting our hands dirty in a metal foraging workshop!

Did you know these remote islands were actually occupied by the USA? It was only relatively recently, around 60 years ago, that the Ogasawara Islands were returned to Japan.
Although the islands once had a thriving population of over 7,000 people, everyone was forced to evacuate to the mainland during the second world war, and the islands were re-occupied by the Japanese military instead.
After the war, the US occupied the islands but returned them to Japan in 1968, it was only after that, that the Japanese were able to move back and re-settle on the island. Everything you see on the island now, including the lush forestation, could only thrive after the war, making the ecosystem relatively young here.
Many remnants of the war remain scattered around the island and are preserved and used as educational tools for visitors. This forest is like a living museum.
