An abandoned mine that smells? That's what you'll get if you explore a sulfur mine like I did. While out in the desert doing some hiking just outside Death Valley National Park, I came across this abandoned sulfur mine. There was an opening to very minimal underground workings, and further behind that was a large, open-pit sulfur mine. There is a lot of leftover, abandoned processing equipment strewn about the site that is quite interesting to look at. This mine was worked sporadically from 1917 to about 1965 or so. It's reported to be the biggest sulfur deposit west of the Misssissippi River and that there is still a lot of sulfur left inside it to be extracted. It's extreme remoteness is probably why nobody has attempted further extraction of the sulfur since the 1960s.
