Dunmore Park House, often referred to as the Dunmore Estate, is a ruined country mansion located near Airth in Falkirk, Scotland. The estate’s history stretches back to the early 16th century, but the grand house seen today was built between 1820 and 1822 for George Murray, the 5th Earl of Dunmore. Designed by architect William Wilkins, the mansion was a symbol of aristocratic wealth and power, set within extensive landscaped grounds that also included older structures such as Elphinstone Tower and the famous Dunmore Pineapple.
The Murray family lived at Dunmore Park House for nearly a century before leaving in the early 1900s, as large country estates became increasingly expensive and impractical to maintain. After this, the house passed through several owners and was later used as a girls’ school during the mid-20th century. That final chapter ended in 1964, when the school closed and the building was abandoned.
From that point on, Dunmore Park House was left largely empty. Without upkeep, the structure rapidly deteriorated, and parts of the mansion were later demolished for safety reasons during the 1970s. Various redevelopment plans were proposed over the years, including hotels and housing projects, but none ever came to fruition. As a result, the house has now been abandoned for over 60 years.
