Yōkai: Scenes of the Supernatural in Japanese Woodblock Prints
In Japanese folklore, supernatural cats abound. More mild bakeneko, or "ghost cats,"can be dangerous, sometimes accidentally causing fires with their torch-like tails. Larger and deadlier are the monster cats known as nekomata, who despise and kill humans. Here, a nekomata at Nekomata Bridge threatens to cause a fire while battling a samurai.
