During winter, the thundering waterfalls of Johnston Canyon freeze and become a spectacular show of natural ice sculptures.
Here’s some handy information to know if you plan on visiting:
Lower Falls Trail 🥾
The trail to the Lower Falls is 1.2km one way and is rated as easy. It typically takes around 1 hour to complete round trip.
Upper Falls Trail 🥾
The trail to the Upper Falls is 2.5km one way and is rated as easy, with an elevation gain of 120 metres. It typically takes around 2 hours to complete round trip.
Discover Banff Tours and White Mountain Adventures offer a guided tour along Johnston Canyon and provides both ice cleats and hiking poles to make the walk easy for all ages. You’ll also be treated to hot chocolate and cookies!
If you are looking to explore Johnston Canyon on your own, ice cleats are highly recommend for extra traction, and they can be rented from Snowtips-Bactrax, Ultimate Sports Banff, and White Mountain Adventures Banff.
During the weekends, we recommend taking Roam Public Transit Route 9 to Johnston Canyon as parking can be limited at this popular trailhead.
