Expert Photographer, Al Genius, will teach you quickly and with humor all you need to know about depth of field in the wonderful world of photography. See visual examples of depth of field and ways to use it most effectively. Remember you may not be an expert, but you can be a Photography Genius.
Depth of field is the range of focus in a picture, with deep depth of field having many things in focus and shallow depth of field having only a few things in focus. There are five ways to change depth of field: adjusting the aperture (closing for more focus, opening for less), changing the focal length of the lens (zooming in for blurrier backgrounds, out for more in focus), altering the distance between you and the subject (closer for narrower depth, further for wider depth), focusing on a specific focal plane (changing focus distance to control what's sharp), and adjusting the camera angle (tilting affects depth of field). Aperture is the only factor affecting exposure or brightness.
For best results, focus a third into the picture to achieve depth of field, especially in landscape photography. Changing the camera angle can also affect the depth of field, with tilting causing different parts of the subject to be in focus.
