It was recorded at Elektra Sound Recorders in Los Angeles, California, between May 10 and May 25, 1970. It was produced by Don Gallucci and engineered by Brian Ross-Myring. Steve Mackay also contributed tenor saxophone to the track.
The song exemplifies The Stooges' aggressive and unpolished sound, which was a significant precursor to punk rock.

A supergroup formed by members of Pearl Jam, Guns N' Roses, Mudhoney, and Screaming Trees (including Mike McCready, Duff McKagan, Mark Arm, and Barrett Martin) performed "Down on the Street" as part of a one-off Iggy & The Stooges tribute show under the name "Raw Power."
It's important to note that many bands who cite The Stooges as an influence might play "Down on the Street" in live settings or as part of informal recordings, even if those versions aren't widely released.
