Hello friends, this is the ExpertColor MED3201 - an AMD InterWave based wavetable-soundcard from 1995. AMDs attempts on PC-sound starts with the InterWave and was no succes.
The Interwave is based on the Gravis GF1 as AMD aquires Gravis Sound division wich was well known for their Ultrasound series. But it was to late to become a best-seller - Creative already settled their SoundBlaster standard at this point. And Soundblaster compatibility was not the Interwaves strenght (SB comptibility and OPL2, no SB-Pro support). Only minor games supporting the Interwave directly or could be patched, and FM emulation was another weak point (as we will find out in the next video).
But on the other hand they offer a General Midi compatible wavetable with MPU401 support via driver. And even when the ExpertColor MED3201 just came with the smalles waverom, its quite balanced. Sadly ExpertColor decided to give no option to upgrade additional ram as we know from the GUS PnP (or other cloes) as an exampe, and this card also is not detected as an Ultrasound in GUS-supporting games.
So we will check its OPL2 / Adlib compatibility (in the next video) and its General Midi wavetable (in this video).
I chose the following tracks for the demonstration;
1: Doom - At Doom's Gate - the classic you all know and therefore great for comparison.
2: Doom 2 - Into Sandy's City - My track of choise to compare different wavetables.
3: Descent - Europa Mining Colony (Level 13) - Great music, and because i like how it sounds on this card.
Doom and Doom II are developed and released by ID software in 1993/1994, music composed by Robert Price
Descent was developed by Parallax Software and released by Interplay in 1995, music composed by Ken Allen, Brian Luzietti, Larry Peacock, Leslie Spitzer, Jim Torres and Tim Wiles.
