In Part 3 of our 2024 Indonesian Expedition, we climb to the summit of Karangetang Volcano (also known as Api Siau) on the Island of Siau. Karangetang is a very active volcano - one of the most active volcanoes in the country and has erupted many times throughout history. The volcano has two main craters and is known for its explosive eruptions, which can produce dangerous pyroclastic flows and lahars.

Without a track, we had to bush bash through dense jungle, then make a camp on top of volcanic rocks. The next morning, we made the climb to the summit where we observed two large lava domes and vigorous degassing.
