Why are so many people willing to believe a nutty 19th century idea over 50 years of solid and growing evidence for plate tectonics? Because scientists are always conspiring to keep the truth from us, of course.

For an understanding of plate tectonics, just check out any geology textbook. There are many lines of evidence to the theory, so try googling the following:
Sea floor spreading
Magnetic stripes
Oceanic ridges
Mountain uplift
Altimetry
Subduction
Make sure the websites are reputable, preferably from known academic institutions. For a more detailed look at the evidence, research hundreds of papers that have been written since the 1950s. Here are a few to get you started:
Lithosphere plate-continental margin tectonics and the evolution of the Appalachian orogen
JM BIRD... - Bulletin of the Geological Society ..., 1970
United plates of America, the birth of a craton: Early Proterozoic assembly and growth of Laurentia
PF Hoffman - Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, 1988
Change of tectono-stratigraphic regime in the Australian plate during the 99 Ma (mid-Cretaceous) and 43 Ma (mid-Eocene) swerves of the Pacific
-- JJ Veevers - Geology, 2000 - geology
Plate tectonics and the Himalayas
CMA Powell... - Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 1973
Sequence stratigraphy and plate tectonic significance of the Transvaal succession of southern Africa and its equivalent in Western Australia
ES Cheney - Precambrian Research, 1996
