On Thursday 17 November 2022, Abahlali baseMjondolo, the Forge and the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) hosted an event to launch a new photo exhibition and a new publication. The photo exhibition, entitled Socialism or Death: Abahlali baseMjondolo on the frontlines of struggle is a collection of images taken by Nomfundo Xolo and Siyabonga Mbhele.
The new publication is a Community Practice Note by the SERI entitled Abahlali baseMjondolo: Living Politics documenting Abahlali baseMjondolo’s 17-year history since its formation, its strategies and tactics for advancing their objectives of accessing land, housing and basic services and how it has responded to evictions and repression in a highly charged political context and how it has survived repeated and varied forms of state violence, costing the movement 24 lives since 2009.
The exhibition launch was followed by a viewing and then a panel discussion on Abahlali baseMjondolo: Living Politics facilitated by Lauren Royston, director of research and advocacy at SERI.
