This is a special Exchange Talk showcasing the doctoral research being undertaken by first-year full-time students from our PhD and DPerf cohorts at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Jacquelyn Hazle - Intentionality: Music’s Capacity for Aboutness
This presentation considers music’s capacity for intentionality, how it may influence the compositional process, and different types of conscious intentional states that can be held by a composer and music.
Anthony Cowie - The Sounds Of Science: A Practice-Based PhD Exploring The Use, Purpose And Potential Of Music In Science Centres
This research investigates the contribution that music and sound can make to enhance the process of learning in environments that are commonly thought of as chaotic acoustic spaces.
Emily Davis - From Dancing to Dance Health Research
Dance is increasingly being recognized as a means of health promotion for people living with long-term conditions. Scottish Ballet’s dance for multiple sclerosis program presents a novel opportunity for research in the emerging field of dance health.
Jaime Diaz - Toward a Queer Concept of the Score
The effects of staff-based notation's biases on nonnormative composers in gender, race, and disability.
Baichuan Hui - The virtue of music composed in Theresienstadt Ghetto
This project comprises research and performances in various forms of four Jewish composers’ works, written during their imprisonment in Theresienstadt Ghetto during WWII. This study will discover how the context of the concentration camp influenced and shaped the creation and reception of their music.
Stephanie Lamprea - Corporeality and Dissolution: Critiquing the Binary in Gendered Vocal Performance
This presentation seeks to analyze binary gender identities embedded into the norms of classical vocal training and show how aspects of feminist new materialism, feminist pedagogy, and current non-binary / gender-fluid voice practices can allow for more radical and dynamic performance.
Sinae Sung - Henselt and his piano music
Exploring Adolf von Henselt's pianism through analysing the relationship between German and Russian music of the romantic period, and exploring musical features related with his technique such as his extendable hands.
