#TheMarchViolets #DandelionKing #MadeGlorious @JungleRecordsPlay Dead Walk Away live on The Tube TVJungle Records2022-12-01 | Play Dead live on TV in 1984. Play Dead release their first career-spanning anthology: a limited-edition blue vinyl LP with ten of their most essential tracks; the digipak CD expands to sixteen tracks. (This track isn't on it; it'll come later.) Between 1980-1985 they grew into one of the UK’s leading post-punk bands with regular indie chart hits and a dedicated live following.
The band formed in Banbury, Oxfordshire in 1980 with vocalist Robert Hickson, guitarist Re Vox (aka Barry Turnbull), bassist Peter Waddleton and Mark Smith (aka ‘Wiff’) on drums. After a couple of 1981 singles on Fresh Records the band toured with UK Decay and were invited for the first of three John Peel Sessions in early 1982. By then Steve Green had replaced Re on guitar with their line-up remaining stable thereafter. They released their ‘Single of the Week’ Propaganda on Jungle Records.
Fusing rock, funk, metal and numerous new music influences, they were embraced into the fledgling post-punk tribal scene, joining Sex Gang Children for a lengthy tour, swiftly followed by another tour supporting Killing Joke, promoting the release of their debut album 'The First Flower' for Jungle in 1983. By then they had earned a loyal following and became a regular fixture on the live circuit. A Beggars Banquet/Situation 2 one-off single Shine followed swiftly, before they switched labels again to the Staffordshire-based Clay Records for a series of four singles – Break, Isobel, Conspiracy and Sacrosanct, along with an album From the Promised Land and a live album and video Into the Fire. These releases were all indie UK chart hits and backed by a busy touring schedule. At the end of 1984 they performed on The Tube, then the UK’s top music TV show – their fans came along in good numbers for the live show.
Next they surprised many by persuading German krautrock producer Conny Plank to record their album Company of Justice, released on their own label Tanz in 1985. It became their highest indie-chart entry at number 3, and marked further musical progression with electronic enhancements. They toured frequently that year throughout the UK, as well as regular visits to Europe. However, in early 1986 they announced they had decided to split. Their final single, Burning Down from the Conny Plank sessions, was issued posthumously; The Collection opens with the 7” version of that track, the first time it’s been available since then.
LP tracks: Burning Down, Isabel, Sin of Sins, Sacrosanct, Propaganda, This Side of Heaven, Shine, Witnesses, Break, The Tenant. CD tracks: Burning Down, Isabel, Sin of Sins, Sacrosanct, Time, Chains, Propaganda, Pale Fire, Gaze, This Side of Heaven, Shine, Witnesses, Conspiracy, Company of Justice, Break, The Tenant. RIP Walter Lure. His autobiography, 'To Hell and Back ... my life in Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers' is published by Backbeat Books.
Lyrics: Ten years old, anything goes All you ever knew was a bullshit phone Now you’re on the bells, yacking in the booths But where you supposed to go? Well I just don’t know, so
Get off the phone There’s nobody home Get off the phone ‘Cause I don’t want you I don’t want you
What’s that ringing sound? Everything keeps going round and round Calling everybody and their mother too But don’t call me cause I just left you
Get off the phone There’s nobody home Get off the phone ‘Cause I don’t want you I don’t want you
You hung up on love when I called that night You hung up on the bells at the ringside fight You hung up on your heart You hung up on the world Now you hung yourself on the telephone pole, so
Get off the phone There’s nobody home Get off the phone ‘Cause I don’t want you I don’t want you
I don’t care what you wear, I don’t know, oh yeah
Get off the phone There’s nobody home Get off the phone ‘Cause I don’t want you I don’t want you I don’t want you ...

Their debut Rent Party LP is reissued on Record Store Day RSD Drop#2 as a limited edition in blue vinyl with two bonus tracks, followed by the CD version.
Sadly, Walter died in August 2020, the last of the ‘L.A.M.F.’ Heartbreakers. His memoir, the "sensational, fast-paced read": "To Hell And Back: My Life In Johnny Thunders’ Heartbreakers - In The Words Of The Last Man Standing" is published by Backbeat in paperback edition. Upon the original Rent Party CD release, AllMusic.com said - "The long awaited Waldos album proved to be a big success, at least artistically ... the Waldos tear through a set of tunes that are as much fun as a CD can have with its clothes on."
Walter Lure’s guitar-sparring partner in The Waldos in place of Johnny Thunders is Joey Pinter, whose self-titled solo album was released in 2015. The rhythm section is the late Tony Coiro on bass and Jeff West on drums except on the bonus Crazy Little Baby 7” tracks, the late Charlie Sox.
The album features six Walter Lure originals, plus covers of Jerry Nolan, Gary US Bonds, Claudine Clark and Ray Charles songs. The LP is a limited edition in transparent blue vinyl, with inner bag, and following it will be a reissue of the CD version.
14 tracks: Cry Baby; Love That Kills; Sorry; Seven Day Weekend; Never Get Away; Golden Days; Crazy Little Baby (7” ver); Flight: Countdown Love; Busted; Crazy Little Baby; Crazy Bout Your Love; Party Lights; Cry Baby (7” ver).

#TheWaldos #WalterLure #NewYorkPunk @JungleRecordsHeartbreakers L.A.M.F. EXPLAINER: Born To Lose ~ the Found Masters new clear audio!Jungle Records2021-06-30 | FOUND IN AN ATTIC - the original tape, without 'mud'! This classic punk album, made in London by New York Dolls Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan's new band the Heartbreakers, was always controversial - and not just for the acronym. Upon release on Track Records in 1977, it was universally condemned in the music press for having a 'muddy mix' - later found to be a mastering fault. When Track went bust the following year, manager Leee Black Childers burgled the Track Records' Carnaby Street office and liberated the tapes that belonged to him and the band - but he found everything except the master-tape.
Deluxe 2CD version now on sale, here: jungle-records.myshopify.com 45th Anniversary neon pink & white LP pre-selling soon too!
Subsequent releases were remixed from the multi-tracks ('Revisted', 1984) or compiled from outtake mixes - the 'lost '77 mixes' (1994) being the version most known since. A tweaked needle lift from vinyl for a 'definitive' box set removed a lot of the 'mud' but still didn't achieve full clarity. Meanwhile, fans found that the 1977 cassette version didn't have that infamous 'mud', nor did certain European vinyl matrixes.
Unexpectedly, in 2020 a chance meeting led Jungle to Daniel Secunda's archives. Danny was an old-school music biz pioneer who became a Track Records director - and the Heartbreakers 'L.A.M.F.' co-producer. In amongst his archives stored in his attic were numerous tape boxes, including two with no artist name, marked: 'Copy Master 12.7.77'. They turned out to be a crystal-clear 'L.A.M.F.', just as the band and producers intended it.
Sadly, in August 2020 the Heartbreakers co-lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Walter passed away. He was the last of the Heartbreakers 'L.A.M.F.' line-up - Johnny Thunders died in 1991, Jerry Nolan in 1992, and Billy Rath in 2014. Walter's punk memoir autobiography is published in paperback in June 2021, and his band The Waldos also get their album 'Rent Party' reissued on blue vinyl for Record Store Day's RSD Drop2, followed by a CD reissue.
So - is it much different? Vive Le Rock's Joe Whyte's review says:- "the sound is clearer, sharper, more focused but it's fairly subtle too. If the songs are ingrained in your DNA, you'll feel the difference straight away. Punchier and clearer with Nolan's drums and cymbals cutting through, Billy Rath's bass slinkier and ballsier than the original mixes. The buccaneering guitar licks of Thunders guitar are right in your face, and Walter Lure's choppy, sinuous leads wind in and out."
An example: 'It's Not Enough' - when choosing tracks for 'the Lost mixes' from the attempts at assorted studios, there were only two versions to choose from. One had vocals mixed far too high; the other very low. We went with the low vocals version - they almost fade away at one point. Now, we can hear the correctly balanced mix.
Tracks: Born To Lose, Baby Talk, All By Myself, I Wanna Be Loved, It's Not Enough, Chinese Rocks, Get Off The Phone, Pirate Love, One Track Mind, I Love You, Goin' Steady, Let Go, Can't Keep My Eyes On You*, Do You Love Me*. Cat. no: TRACKLP77. *Includes two tracks originally released as single b-sides. Vinyl is Direct Metal Mastered from 24-bit analogue tape transfers.

The vinyl has sold out. 'L.A.M.F. - the found '77 masters' was first released on vinyl for Record Store Day 2021 on July 17 as a limited edition in transparent purple vinyl, with inner bag and new notes by Simon Wright, plus a 12" poster of a Roberta Bayley cover outtake pic. Listen to Bob Dylan and Iggy Pop talking about Johnny, here:- youtu.be/EW199dkqenI Broadcast on 26th April 1990, just a year before Johnny died the following April 23rd. Filmed in Ireland for the Nighthawks programme.
Johnny had previously shown his respect for Bob Dylan by covering 'Like a Rolling Stone', also on the Hurt Me album. and may have been drawn to this song as it's about an Italian-American mobster Joey Gallo, who despite being convicted of extortion and acccused of murder was viewed sympathetically by many who viewed him as an Italian-American folk hero. After Dylan was criticised for the lyrics for glorifying Gallo, he said that his co-writer Jaques Levy had actually written the lyrics.
Johnny's version abbreviates the lyrics of Dylan's much longer version originally released on his 'Desire' album.

** A remastered 'best of' collection of their series of eccentric post-punk singles and albums between 1979 and 1982, on limited translucent blue vinyl. Described as ‘entertaining idiosyncratic experimentalism’ (‘Who’s Who of Indie and New Wave’), but they also have very evident pop sensibilities. Best known for their indie-chart hits such as ‘Debbie Harry’, ‘Playing Golf With My Flesh Crawling’ and ‘Savoir Faire’, today they sound like a forerunner of Stereolab.
A group of musicians based around songwriter Alig Fodder, with vocals regularly contributed by French chanteuse Dominique Levillain, who met through mutual friends This Heat. This is an edited vinyl version of their 1998 'best of' CD, issued on Douglas Wolk's Dark Beloved Cloud label in the USA, with newly concise versions of some lengthier tracks. Since then they've regenerated and have issued new albums on various labels and also on Bandcamp, and had their songs covered by a number of their many artist admirers.
12 Tracks: Savoir Faire, Der Leiermann, Darling, Playing Golf, Warm, Film Music, Debbie Harry, The Big Dig, Cold Wars, Cerf Volant, Dinosaur Sex, Monkey. (Tracks are remastered and most are new concise versions.)
'Film Music' lyrics:
"Film Music – is empty – it pleases me – come and see Film Music – is empty – it pleases me – come and see
It makes me feel good – it makes me feel better or worse better or worse than before It’s empty – it pleases me – come and see Film Music – is empty – it pleases me – come and see
Film Music is the perfect background for me – like transparency I love Film Music – I think it’s good for me.
I’m in the Turkish mountains – taking a bath in a hot spring In my head a bell rings … We have to stop for lunch I’m empty – it pleases me – come and see Film Music – is empty – it pleases me – come and see
Film Music is the perfect background for me Still you don’t see what we don’t want you to see Cut everything – leaves you and me Can’t cut me …
Film Music – is empty – it pleases me – come and see Film Music – is empty – it pleases me – come and see
I’m on the Pacific coast – fighting androids on some faraway beach Each time I’m a star in this film – I miss it every week The Orchestra saw on those strings – in my head a bell rings We have to stop for lunch
I’m empty – it pleases me – come and see Film Music – is empty – it pleases me – come and see
Film Music is the perfect background for me Still you don’t see what we don’t want you to see Cut everything – leaves you and me Can’t cut me …
Film music – it’s in me – it’s in me"

Tracks:- 1 Mind in Motion* (excerpt), 2 Art of Persuasion, 3 Wine and Roses, 4 Labour in Vain*, 5 So Busy*, 6 Five Towns*, 7 Trapped*, 8 Land of the Free, 9 Comrades, 10 Language of Life*, 11 Lenin. The tape then ends at the beginning of House, they probably also played Ladderjack, Stigma and more, but you'll have to stick with the studio versions for those.
A Popular History of Signs formed in 1981, first on their cooperative 'Melodia' label along with fellow north London band To The Finland Station. After 3 Melodia singles (Justice Not Vengeance, Crowds, Dancing With Ideas) they moved to Jungle in 1983. Further indie-chart singles If She Was A Car/Stigma, House/Ladderjack, Body & Soul, and Art of Persuasion were issued as well as an album, Comrades ('84), a compilation, Taste ('88) and the mini-album Western Wind ('88) with an evolved line-up. Ladderjack drew the attention of Al Jourgensen of Ministry, who remixed it for an early release on Chicago's Wax Trax label. With album releases also in France and Spain, they found a bigger audience outside the UK.

A live version of their 1986 single. Ten more songs from the gig can be seen here: youtu.be/K7rjANCoIMM - six of them being unreleased songs. A Popular History of Signs formed in 1981, first on their cooperative 'Melodia' label along with fellow north London band To The Finland Station. After 3 Melodia singles (Justice Not Vengeance, Crowds, Dancing With Ideas) they moved to Jungle in 1983. Further indie-chart singles If She Was A Car/Stigma, House/Ladderjack, Body & Soul, Art of Persuasion were issued as well as an album, Comrades ('84), a compilation, Taste ('88) and the mini-album Western Wind with an evolved line-up ('88). Ladderjack drew the attention of Al Jourgensen of Ministry, who remixed it for an early release on Chicago's Wax Trax label.

'Blame It On Mom' (lyrics below) is featured on the 'Que Sera Sera' abum, recently remixed & revamped for a 'Resurrected' double-vinyl edition, available here: https://smarturl.it/JTQSS2xLP 3xCD box set & digital versions also available. 'Que Sera Sera - Resurrected' 2xLP info:
Johnny Thunders' 1985 studio album – remixed and revamped with many unheard tracks. Remixed by Pat Collier, it features two new tracks discovered on the album 2-inch tapes along with six unreleased outtakes.
The album features Wilko Johnson, Mike Monroe, John Perry, Patti Palladin, Henri-Paul Tortosa, Nasty Suicide, Stiv Bators, JC Carroll, Glen Matlock amongst others. The bonus LP has one side of studio outakes and five live tracks on the other.
A Record Store Day release in 2019, in a limited edition in purple and white vinyl. It includes an insert with unseen pics, and the gatefold sleeve has comprehensive new background notes by Johnny Thunders biographer, Nina Antonia.
The unreleased tracks left off the original album are Countdown Love, a Jerry Nolan song regularly featured in Johnny's live shows but not used as Jerry hadn't yet issued his own version at the time; and Talk About You, a blues guitar work-out that Johnny loosely based around the Chuck Berry song.
The bonus LP has six outtakes on one side, including Copy Cat and the previously unheard Taking You Up Avenue D. Five live tracks from the period take up the other side. Tie Me Up with Patti Palladin which was added to the original album is from the 'Crawfish' sessions, so it's not on the 'Que Sera, Sera' multi-track tapes and doesn't appear. The title-track, recorded by Johnny as an after-thought in February 1987 (along with his Short Lives remix) for a single, does gain its rightful place on the album, completing 12 tracks on disc 1.
The remix is by The Vibrators' Pat Collier, who has brought the guitar properly up in the mix. Johnny didn't stay in London for the original mixing sessions, and now it can be heard nearer to how we believe he intended.
The 2xLP includes a 12" x 24" lyric insert full of unseen photos. The new gatefold sleeve notes by Thunders biographer Nina Antonia include new interviews with various participants, including Mike Monroe. It's a limited edition in purple & clear white vinyl.
DISC 1: Remixed: Alone In A Crowd, Countdown Love, Blame It On Mom, Talk About You, M.I.A., Little Bit Of Whore, Short Lives, I Only Wrote This Song For You, Cool Operator, Billy Boy, Endless Party, Que Sera Sera. DISC 2: Outtakes & alternate versions: Copy Cat, Blame It On Mom (outtake),Taking You Up Avenue D, Short Lives (outtake), I Only Wrote This Song For You (outtake), Cool Operator (first version). Live in Lyon: Countdown Love, Just Another Girl, Talk About You, Alone In A Crowd, It’s Alright (Blame It On Mom). FREUDLP129 (2xLP)
Lyrics: Johnny tried out different lyrics on different days - you'll hear a different verse in this Musik Convoy performance and there are other versions on 'Que Sera Sera - Resurrected'.
"Blame It On Mom" Well maybe your Mother never told you Maybe your Father's too kind Well I'm gonna tell you baby I think it's just a waste of time Oh baby waste my time
Well baby baby what do you know I think it's time to go
All the things that you say Baby it's the other way Oh leave me alone I wanna go home [repeat]
Oh baby waste my time... [repeat]

Lyrics:
It's a different kind of life when you're on this programme You see things you never thought could be seen You get the other side of life when you're on this programme, baby Things get dirty when they look so clean
I don't even recall the things that you accuse me of I feel so far away from everything I ever loved, I ever loved You know you've gotta sweat when you're on this programme, honey The lights are glaring, it's a cold heat We're all God's children and we got A constant struggle in the face of defeat
I've been having bad dreams, I can't get to sleep at night I feel so far away, I'm walking on the edge of time, the edge of time Well look at him he's hurt now, he's bleeding The curious will come and see him They fantasise about his life They see humour in him
Every time you drop your guard, you find it twice as hard To reconcile your feelings You can always justify, all the times you've almost died Say life ain't that appealing
That's the last you'll get, trapped by life, you Prefer existence on the other side The local residents are all white And their morals are well-defined

In 1989 Jungle were privileged to get the UK licence for Nina Simone’s latest studio album, ‘Nina’s Back’ (her penultimate album), and the ‘Live and Kickin’’ album. Excited to be issuing music by such an icon, we were even more so when we found out she was due to perform at the Royal Albert Hall to coincide. Apart from an archive hit single from an advert and sometimes erratic Ronnie Scott's residencies, little had been heard from her in recent years.
BBC2’s TV programme ‘The Late Show’ (the ‘Later’ music programme forerunner) were keen to book her to perform. TV presenter Tracey MacLeod was chasing us on the phone, the BBC paid peanuts but the exposure would have been well worth it for most artists. We hired Rough Trade's legendary PR guy, the late Scott Piering to also try and get on the radio and in the press. However, meeting with Nina’s bemused manager in the posh Notting Hill Arts Club – not typically our scene – was frustrating.
Eventually, Nina Simone phones us up. She’s very grateful for our interest, but she’s moved on from this album and the people she recorded it with (producer Eddie Singleton, whom we also met up with), and she really can’t demean herself by jumping on to any promotional circus (paraphrased slightly!). Leaving us feeling simultaneously excited, disappointed and a bit naïve.
The Royal Albert Hall concert was wonderful. A true diva, in the nicest sense.
We issued the single 'It's Cold Out Here', an Arthur Adams song, on no less than four formats (7”, 12”, CD & a cassette single - well it was the 80's). It had single edits, live version b-sides of 'My Baby Just Cares For Me' and 'Mississippi Goddam', all in a vain attempt to dent the charts. Sometimes we still have some on sale at our ebay shop... ebay.co.uk/str/junglerecords
Meanwhile, the German label we licensed from provided this video of the lead track ‘It’s Cold Outside’. To be honest we weren't that keen on this video, nor were TV programmes interested anyway - so this is the very first time it’s ever been seen.
