18th century hair is a lot of work so I made a wig to slap on the day of the ball! A Janeite Sews 2023-09-30 | I think I have my hair sorted for the 18th century ball in Saint Louis in October! I started with a whole lace synthetic wig, put curls (perm rods) and pin curls (hair pins) in it for the tête de mouton hairstyle, like the coiffure francaise in the @americanduchess guide to beauty. Next I boiled the curled parts (well, poured boiling water on them and let them steep for two minutes).I let the wig dry completely before removing the rods and pins. The i pomaded and powdered using @lbcchistorical products and teased before wrapping the buckles around a large knitting needle and securing with hairpins. I teased the heck out of the front for that sheep hair look lolI’m sure I’ll need to powder again on the day of the ball, and I might make more buckle curls to attach! In the actual 18th century, dresses like this would most often be fit on the wearer. I had some help from friends and my mom to get the best-fitting bodice I’ve ever made (for 18th c costuming), and I spent a lot of time pattern matching with this gorgeous striped and floral cotton.
