If you know Italy you know that coffee is a surprisingly big aspect of Italian culture– coffee is to Italians what tea is to the British and unlike Turkish coffee or caffe Americano, there isn’t just one Italian coffee. In Italy you can have coffee in the form of espresso, cappuccino, macchiato caldo or freddo, lungo, ristretto, or even shakerato and the list doesn’t stop there. The Italian espresso has become world famous and Italian coffee culture has influenced global coffee culture in unexpected ways… just think, where did the idea for Starbucks even really come from? So that said I began to wonder to myself, what did I really know about Italian coffee culture… when and why did this tiny drink made of tiny, foreign, beans come to have such a huge impact on daily life in Italy and why was I not allowed to drink a cappuccino with my lunch and why. In this episode we’re talking about everything coffee and why it’s kind of a big deal.
