Most travelers visiting Guatemala skip the country's capital city: Guatemala City. When researching what to do in this part of Guatemala, most blogs and online anecdotes talk about how unsafe the city is, and how there might not even be very much to do in Guatemala City. But, so many of these article's authors admit to never having been to the city themselves. They seem to be following other blog-writers advice to skip Guatemala City, but those blog writers haven't been to the city either. To avoid missing out on Guatemala's capital at the advice of people who hadn't been, we decided to take the risk and visit Guatemala City ourselves to see if it is really ad dangerous or boring as the online world makes it out to be.

Our first stop was a classic: the Central Plaza (or Plaza de la Constitución). This is an iconic spot in the historic centre of Guatemala, but on a Tuesday morning, it isn't quite the bustling tourist attracting it might be on the weekends. We took some time really taking in our surroundings here and felt a bit on edge, but Evie quickly made 800 new friends and our day really turned around.

After the Central Plaza, we took a stroll down Paseo de la Sexta to check out Guatemala City's most famous walking street, and then found ourselves being warned against thieves by two local women as we prepared to go into Mercado Central. It was a bit nerve wracking being warned about thieves by local women, so we took their advice seriously and put away our valuables (with the exception of the camera). The market also turned out to be a great lunch spot, and we each got some of our favourite Guatemalan food - pepian de pollo and carne asada.

Evie had her fill for the day at this point, so we brought her back to the Air BnB and give you all a Guatemala City Air BnB tour before heading to a spot we were super excited to check out; Oakville Mall. Many Guatemalans had messaged us on Instagram to tell us we should check out this mall when they saw we were in Guatemala City, so we did! We are mall lovers (probably because we are rarely in them), and this one did not disappoint!

Our final stop in Guatemala City was Ciudad Cayala. This city within a city shocked us. It was like we had been taken out of Guatemala and dropped 5000 kilometers away in a Greek City. It was a strange, fascinating, and fun way to end our time traveling in Guatemala City.

We never thought we'd be making travel vlogs on YouTube, but after realizing that we had a unique opportunity to share our adventure and make the world feel more familiar and inviting to anyone watching, we took the leap and picked up the camera! We hope our videos show how wonderful, delicious, and friendly the world can be.
