The celebrations started before Starship had even finished its journey home.
Flight 13 launched cleanly, powered through ascent with remarkable precision, survived one of the most punishing atmospheric reentries ever attempted by a rocket of its size, and then splashed down in the ocean looking far better than almost anyone expected. For a few hours, it felt like SpaceX had taken another giant step toward making Starship a truly reusable spacecraft.
Then engineers started looking closer.
Not at the engines. Not at the launch. Not even at the landing.
They focused on something much less obvious: the heat shield.
