On July 1, 1999, in broad daylight at Santa Barbara Plaza, Avery confronted two people he knew, Annette Lewis and Percy Branch. It was over a drug debt. Words were exchanged, and Avery pulled out a .45-caliber handgun. He shot Lewis in the chest, killing her on the spot. Branch was hit in the stomach but survived. Avery ran, but not for long.
