Five sensors. One river. A level of detail the Anacostia has never had before.
Trey Sherard of Anacostia Riverkeeper is one of the people who knows this waterway most intimately — and he says the new network of continuous water quality sensors deployed along the Anacostia River represents a genuine leap forward. Not just in the type of data being collected, but in how often. Each sensor pings every 15 minutes, building a picture of the river in near real time.
The five sensors — deployed by Riverkeeper and the Anacostia Watershed Society through a partnership with the Reservoir Center — are spaced along the mainstem from Bladensburg down to Buzzard Point, covering the heart of the river.
That spacing, combined with the frequency of readings, gives researchers and advocates something they've never had: a continuous, high-resolution record of what the Anacostia is actually doing.
