In a year that has restricted our human interactions, physical movement and personal liberties more than any in our lifetimes, the mind of Mat4yo runs its absolute wildest and freest in his fourth studio album.

“Evergreen Datastream” sets reality and fantasy on a colorful crash course. Mat4yo illustrates his passions for both nature and technology in a manner that is both oxymoronic and harmonious.

He challenges the intangibility of data with “Nostalgia Trap,” which renders real emotions out of computer information. He questions the tangibility of earthly objects with “Maiden Blue,” which scores a 12-minute-long odyssey through the existentialism evoked by plants and wildlife.

Through musical meditation, Mat4yo suspends his body in stasis to globetrot across lyrical locations. He teleports to a hole-in-the-wall bar on a rainy night in Paris with “Indigo,” serving as a purgatory for lost lovers. High on sunshine, he gallivants through a suburban park in “Freak of Nature.” He uses faded memories of city playgrounds to send advice back in time with the track, “Code Yellow.” In “Shibuya Streets,” Mat4yo envisions a dystopian crowd of blank faces as the collective mirror through which he reflects on his self-ownership and the capacity for free thought in a tribal society.

Mat4yo reinterprets the term, “creative liberty,” with lyrical anomalies that postulate what one can write, rather than submitting to what one should write. In “Misleading Me On,” he deliberately switches trains of thought through the divergent definitions of words and concepts in the English language. He contrasts a dark and gloomy world with vibrant and shocking wordplay related to a bird, of all things, in “Red Wing.”

Finally, the cherry on top, “Lofi & Gravy,” captures a window in history where the world is good, the food is better, and family is of the utmost importance. As a global pandemic casts a dark shadow over our lives, Mat4yo reminds us to keep our best-kept traditions shielded behind that beating organ in our chests.

Each track is assigned a color of the rainbow, with two additional tracks representing the absence of color (black) and the presence of every color (white).

Musically, “Evergreen Datastream” crafts a lush lo-fi landscape with cool, calm and confident vocals. Answering to no one but himself, Mat4yo reaches nirvana with his creative choices. Spontaneity meets well-established convictions at the zenith of authenticity with each track. He only hopes you enjoy this album half as much as he enjoyed making it.
