Notice: This video contains songs from the original series & End of Evangelion only. No songs from Death/Rebirth or the Rebuilds are in this mix. The songs from Ep 24 & EoE are the actual ones used, but the Ep 15 & 22 tracks are simply my closest approximations to the versions used in the show.
So I watched Evangelion recently - that being, the original series, End of Evangelion, and all the Rebuilds. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I found its psychological message to be something I rather needed to hear at this point in my life - it is a good reminder on how escapism cannot substitute the beauty of human interaction.
Evangelion has a lot of interesting aesthetic choices - of course there's the obvious religious themes, from the angels (which more resemble what would be called in today's terms a "biblically accurate angel" than anything else), to artifacts like the Spear of Longinus (which is totally badass), to the presence of cross & crucifix motifs, but most of all I find the inclusion of classical music to supplement many scenes a very interesting touch.
I decided I'd either do a Chrono Trigger soundfont cover or make my first Eva playlist - I decided it would be more fun to make a playlist to start, though!
I have ordered each song by its source episode/movie.
Episode 15:
0:00 - Wedding March (Felix Mendelssohn)
Used in the wedding Misato, Kaji, & Ritsuko attend.
5:08 - Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, Prélude (Bach)
Used as the song Shinji practices on the cello.
Episode 22:
7:14 - Hallelujah (Handel: Messiah)
Used to signify Arael's psychological attack on Asuka.
11:19 - Worthy is the Lamb (Handel: Messiah)
One of two melodies used (Worthy is the Lamb... Amen is how it's credited in official sources) for the sequence towards the end of the episode, where Rei retrieves the Spear of Longinus from Lilith and uses it to destroy Arael.
15:11 - Amen (Handel: Messiah)
The second of two melodies used (Worthy is the Lamb... Amen is how it's credited in official sources) for the sequence towards the end of the episode, where Rei retrieves the Spear of Longinus from Lilith and uses it to destroy Arael.
Episode 24:
19:35 - Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 (Beethoven)
You know why this is here. He really did have a point that this was the highest achievement of Lilin culture.
The End of Evangelion:
42:44 - II Air [Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068] (Bach)
Used for Asuka's battle against the Mass Production Evangelions.
46:09 - Jesus bleibet meine Freude [Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147] (Bach)
An absolutely beautiful performance to wrap up this mix.
Also, shoutout to the guy in the front holding Rei & Asuka plushies.
Notice: In a few countries, (Cyprus, Georgia, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Türkiye), the video is blocked because of the use of "II Air [Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068]" from the End of Evangelion OST. I chose not to trim it out, because I felt that would be removing an important & memorable piece of the score. I suggest you use a VPN to watch this video if you are in one of those countries.
