On June 28, 1997, one of the most infamous moments in sports history unfolded at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In a rematch for the heavyweight championship, Mike Tyson faced Evander Holyfield—just seven months after Holyfield had stunned the boxing world by defeating him in their first bout.
Frustrated by Holyfield’s repeated headbutts and unable to gain control of the fight, Tyson lost his composure. In the third round, he bit Holyfield’s right ear, tearing off a piece of cartilage. After a brief pause, the fight resumed—but moments later, Tyson bit Holyfield’s other ear. Referee Mills Lane stopped the bout and disqualified Tyson, handing Holyfield the victory.
The shocking incident—dubbed “The Bite Fight”—sparked global outrage and dominated headlines. Tyson was fined $3 million, temporarily lost his boxing license, and became a symbol of both athletic brilliance and self-destruction. Holyfield, meanwhile, cemented his legacy as one of boxing’s most composed and resilient champions.
