European Southern Observatory (ESO) | European infrastructure involved in the EHT collaboration @ESOobservatory | Uploaded 2 years ago | Updated 7 hours ago
This video shows the facilities involved in the EHT which Europe is involved with. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), located in Chile, is a collaboration between ESO (on behalf of its Member States in Europe), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan, and the Republic of Chile. The Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) is a collaboration of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR), the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO), and ESO. The Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30-meter telescope is based in the Spanish Sierra Nevada and the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) is located in the French Alps. The data from these telescopes and arrays, as well as the multiple telescopes involved in the EHT across the globe, are sent to two correlation facilities, including one in Europe, at the MPIfR, to be corrected and processed.
