Europe threatened to boycott the FIFA World Cup after FIFA proposed selling part of its tournament business to private investors in a deal worth approximately $4.2 billion.
UEFA’s 55 national associations unanimously opposed the FIFA sell-off, while CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation also rejected the proposal. FIFA eventually backed down, but the controversy surrounding Gianni Infantino, FIFA governance and the proposed World Cup stake sale is continuing.
Now UEFA is reportedly considering legal action, while several European football associations are withdrawing their support for Infantino’s re-election.
So what exactly were the American investors trying to buy? Why did Europe threaten a World Cup boycott? And could private investment have permanently changed the future of international football?
In this video, I look at:
FIFA’s proposed $20 billion commercial company
The planned 20% private-investment stake
The UEFA World Cup boycott threat
The American investors involved
The opposition from Europe, North America and Asia
The fallout for Gianni Infantino
Why football supporters believed the World Cup was being put up for sale
The World Cup has always travelled between countries, absorbing the culture, atmosphere and personality of each host. Would private investment make it more efficient and profitable, or turn it into the same polished global product wherever it goes?
Would you have accepted the investment if it genuinely brought billions into football development, or are there certain things that should never be for sale?
