River Severn Canoe Trip - Day 3. Montford Bridge to Shrewsbury. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2023-06-28 | In this video, I am over on the Welsh/English border to paddle a section of the river Severn with my good friends George, Rachel and of course Andy from Kent Survival. We have three days to paddle from Welshpool to Shrewsbury, wild camping along the way and carrying all we need for the adventure in our canoes.Day three begins with the most stunning early morning river mist - a most positive start to our final day on the river. After a hearty breakfast, we pack up and get back on the water - our camp spot on the narrow beach of an island has been fantastic - better than we could have hoped for and totally unexpected.Our last day takes us along nicely flowing water, lined with trees and teaming with wildlife as we wind our way towards the town of Shrewsbury and the hustle and bustle of civilisation.It has been a wonderful journey along a beautiful river full of surprises and a delightful feast for the eyes whichever direction you look. Angles Way Long Distance Trail. Part 2 - Fritton to Beccles. Solo Wild Camp. Tarp and Hooped Bivvy. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2023-05-31 | In this video, I am continuing with my hike along the Angles Way on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. This 93 mile long distance path follows the river Waveney from its mouth in the Norfolk Broads to its source in the Brecks and beyond.It is a trail I have been wanting to walk for a long time and seemed right to take this route back to where I started this walking adventure all those years ago and thus completing the route - almost circumnavigating the county of Norfolk.I have thoroughly enjoyed walking this first section, 34 miles so far along country lanes, past wide open areas of wetland and open water and along side the beautiful river Waveney. This episode covers the walk between Fritton, with its unusual ribbon lake, through the countryside past stately homes and quaint villages and into Oulton Broad where the path takes me back out to the river once more. I was exhausted after a big 18 mile day, so a bit of dinner and an hour or so sat beside the river enjoying the calm views and a rum sun-downer before zipping myself into my bivvy for the night. The morning brings warmer weather and the last few miles into Beccles - an ancient market town dating back to Saxon times and the end of this leg for the time being. Ill be back to continue the walk later in the year. A fantastic evening of food, beer, good company, more beer, lots of laughs, the glow from the campfire and perhaps a couple more beers.Having chosen a good spot to set up, we hang our hammocks and gather firewood for the evening’s camp fire. A delicious pork pot roast (a little later than intended, nothing to do with the beer you understand) fills our bellies before a comfortable night of slumber amongst the whispering pine trees. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2023-03-29 | In this video, I head off to the woods to do a bit of campfire cooking - traditional English beer battered fish and chips cooked in a dutch oven with homemade (woodsmade) tartare sauce and mushy peas.After gathering firewood, I get a nice fire lit and begin to prepare everything. I am deep frying the fish and chips, so a bit of care is needed with the hot oil to avoid burns and a chip-pan fire! It is always a good idea to have a damp cloth or tea towel at hand to smother the pan if it does catch fire! I don’t normally do review videos, but I was very impressed with the performance of this long range bike, that I wanted to share my thoughts on it with you.With a very impressive range, a range of gear and speed settings, lots of cool features that let you load it up for bikepacking trips, a huge carrying capacity and a nice stealthy paint finish, I was very excited to put it to the test on a long ride.50 miles up the Peddars Way, off-road, muddy, hilly (in parts) and in Winter seemed like a good test to me, what I wasn’t expecting was the additional 24 miles I managed to squeeze out of the battery on the return journey - very impressive by anybodies standard.Its my new off-road woodland assault vehicle, and its huge amounts of fun! Fiido, who make the bike, claim a very impressive range per battery charge and I wanted to test out that range under heavy use in some challenging conditions during winter and so the idea of this trip was born.Heading off from the Suffolk border, I begin my journey northwards, passing through forests, heathland, wetlands, wide rolling hills and along muddy paths and gravel tracks. I head down to a lower altitude to meet with a friend at Dulyn Bothy - a mountain refuge hut where we spend the night sheltered from the biting cold and snow and enjoy a warm fire, a few drinks and great company.The Bothy at Dulyn reservoir is one of many owned and maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association. They are free to use and accommodate several people, offering shelter from the weather in remote mountainous regions. They are basic, but usually have bunks of some description, simple furniture, a place to prepare food and some have a fire place to warm up. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2023-02-01 | In this video, I head up into the high mountains of the Carneddau Range in Snowdonia for a wild camp next to the highest lake in Wales.After climbing through hail and sleet up to 2800ft, I finally arrive at my camp spot - the small lake of Ffynnon Llyffant, an eerie spot strewn with the wreckage of a huge bomber that crashed here in thew 1950s.After setting up my small tent, I clamber inside to take refuge from the worsening weather - weather that intensifies over night, destroying my tent and threatening to expose me to the snow storm raging outside.I do love a bit of extreme weather - it can bring an adventure to life and the challenges it presents can be hugely uplifting if you are prepared and equipped to face them. With everything I need packed in a small 35l drybag, I inflate my boat and head off. Battling through thick vegetation growing in the river, I wind my way along this small Norfolk river and finally arrive at my camp spot for the night.I set up my tent - a new lightweight backpacking tent from OneTigris - the TETRA. I have been excited to try out this tent, especially on this trip since I discovered that my packraft paddle works perfectly as the tent pole. Clearing and picking out a path through the trees, I make my way to a nice spot beside a giant Hornbeam tree and set up camp - awnings, pop-up roof tent, comfy chair, lanterns, fire pit, all the luxuries that I wouldn’t normally be able to take. After camp is made, its time to collect firewood before cooking dinner - a decadent cheese fondue with wine to wash it down. Wilderness Canoe Trip in Norway - Part 6. Exhaustion and Capsize on the Rapids. The Final Two Days. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2022-10-12 | The final leg of our epic journey across the wilds of Sweden and Norway sees us battling on ever downwards towards the massive lake Femunden, the river refusing to give in and make our lives any easier. More long portages, more slippery, stumbling rapids - too shallow to run. Wading out into the river to release the boats as they snag up on the rocks, everything soaked, completely exhausted and eventually, the river gets its prize - Andy overturns and spills into the fast flowing water.These last two days were like a message from the Røa, a reminder of who is boss as it sent us on our way out of the Femundsmarka. This was one of the most physically gruelling days of my life - dragging, lining and carrying the canoes and all our gear for kilometres along stretches of rapid that we could not paddle due to low water levels or just the shear force of the water cascading down the river.The sections that we did paddle seemed short, but were a welcome relief after all the physical effort both in and out of the water. Wilderness Canoe Adventure - Part 4. Descending the River Røa in Norway. White Water Rapids. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2022-09-28 | In this video, part 4 in the series, Andy (Kent Survival) and I cross over the border into Norway and begin our descent of the River Røa.We head off from our last camp spot in Sweden and paddle the last two kilometres to the start of the river in the Fermundsmarka National Reserve. Some rapids we run, others we line the canoes down and some we take the safest option and portage the canoes and gear down - its a remote area, so safety is paramount.Between the river sections and flowing water are calm open lakes, a nice gentle interred before the next excitement and a time to enjoy our surroundings.As evening draws, we look for a good place to set up camp and we find a lovely spot next to a lake where we enjoy the evening with a fire and some well earned dinner.Norway feels very different to the Swedish side of the border - more wild, more rugged and the excitant of the river has changed the tempo of the trip. We leave our overnight camp spot after fuelling up on blueberry pancakes and bacon and begin the long, rocky portage down to lake Rogen - a big lake that will take us across to Norway.Our paddle starts off well with a gentle headwind as we head along the inlet and towards the main expanse of the lake itself. Once around the headland though, things take a different course and we are faced with a tough paddle into the wind for the rest of the day - hour after long hour.Finally, exhausted, we reach the southern shore and find a place to set up camp for our third night in Sweden. And luck was on our side this time - third time lucky - we find an official camp spot with a fire pit, a rock shelter and firewood. Although not essential for campfire cooking, a grill does make life easier when cooking meat, fish and vegetables over the fire and for supporting cooking pots and pans. They provided a stable platform on which to cook and they can be adjusted to take advantage of heat control while you are cooking.I have a few grills that I show in this video, although there are many to choose from when looking for one to buy, some good, some less so. With my bike packed with everything I’ll need, I head off along leafy lanes, gravel tracks and sandy paths to find a nice quiet spot to set up my hammock and tarp. Once set up, I settle down to enjoy the evening with a tasty dinner of Boerewors sausage and rice, washed down with a couple of fine beers.I love the pine forest, I’ve said it many times before - I find it a grounding place with hushed sounds and an intimate beauty. For me it was the perfect place to go for a bit of relaxation and to unwind and de-compress.Travelling by bike as I did means I can reach this place more easily - admittedly, I could get there on foot, but by bike I can get there sooner and have more time to enjoy the place. Having arrived at a peaceful spot deep in the Kentish woodland, we set up our vehicles for the night - Andy in his roof-top tent with his awning deployed and me in my hammock inside my Land Rover 110 also with the awning out for a bit of shade.We set about the usual camp chores of finding and preparing firewood and lighting a fire to cook on. Andy is on dinner duty and you know its going to be good! Beach Wild Camp with Kent Survival. Big Hike Along the River Thames. Abandoned Forts. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2022-05-25 | In this video, I am down in Kent with Andy (Kent Survival) to explore a stretch of the Thames shore line and camp on a remote beach.Our hike took us past two abandoned forts from the 1860s - Shornemead and Cliffe, built to defend the city of London during a time of unrest with France - one still having an original 1890 built torpedo launcher. After the forts we explored the old cement kilns once used as part of the aggregate works at Cliffe and then on to the massive gunpowder works at Cliffe marshes, long since abandoned and now home to thousands of grazing sheep.Finally, after eight hours of walking, we reached our camp spot for the night - shattered, but feeling good after sixteen miles on the trail.We gather a big pile of driftwood for our fire and settle down to relax and cook up a hearty corned beef stew, washed down with a couple of good ales and an evening of catching up and enjoying the sights and sounds of the marshes.I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching! Simon, a bloke in the woods 2022-05-11 | In this video I will be showing you how I clean and maintain my cast iron pots, pans, skillets and dutch ovens to keep them in good condition.Cast iron cookware is by far the best for campfire cooking - the heat distribution is even and food is much less likely to burn than with thinner, lighter materials. The seasoning that builds up over time develops a natural non-stick surface and enhances the flavour of your food - just like your Grandmas old frying pan!Cast iron does however require a bit more care to keep it in good condition and to prevent it from rusting or becoming putrid. Adventure Bike Packing in Suffolk. Three Day Bike Camping Trip with Hippyswift. Part Two. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2022-03-30 | In this video, episode two of my bike packing trip across Suffolk with Luke (Hippyswift), we set off towards the pretty and popular seaside town of Southwold after a good nights sleep in the woods near Halesworth.After a short stop in the town with its picturesque lighthouse, pier, beach huts and beach, we cross the River Blyth and head south along gravel tracks and off road paths towards the village of Dunwich. Dunwich has had a tragic history - once a bustling trade town, it is now just a shadow of former self, much of the town lost to the ever destructive forces of the sea. Heading inland slightly, we pass the Abbey at Leiston and across the estuary once again at Snape and then back to the sea at Orford with its imposing castle.Our day ends near here - a welcome slumber amongst the pine forest - well needed rest before our final journey back to Nacton via Rendlesham forest and Woodbridge.I thoroughly enjoyed this mini tour of the Eastern coastal area of Suffolk - so much history spanning millennia and countryside that takes your breath away at every turn. Travelling and exploring by bike is great fun - you can cover good distances in relative comfort (despite the hills!) and you can carry a good amount of gear without the aches and pains associated with backpacking.We head off from Nacton on the River Orwell estuary and cycle north, passing the pretty town of Woodbridge and on up to historical Framlingham with its impressive, well preserved castle. DIY Rocket Stove. Make a Powerful and Efficient Wood Burning Camp Stove from Recycled Beer Cans. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2022-03-16 | In this video I am back in the shed making the third and final stove in this mini series on DIY wood burning camp stoves. This episode shows the building of a powerful twin walled rocket stove. Using recycled materials, I build the inner chamber, feed port and chimney, then insert it into the outer section, packing the void with fireproof vermiculite. On testing, the stove out-performs all the other stoves I have built - it produces a hot, powerful fire thanks to the chimney effect built in to the design and uses very little fuel to boil water and cook. You can adjust the burn by rotating the stove so that the feed port faces the wind for higher temperature, or point it away from the wind for less power. Although bulkier than the other two stoves in the series, it is still lightweight and highly portable.I am absolutely thrilled with this stove - it will certainly get plenty of use, and all made from items that would otherwise get thrown away - a winner in my book!I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching! Simon, a bloke in the woods 2022-03-09 | In this video I am trying out a Solar Oven for the first time, using the power of the sun to cook a meal without the need for a stove or a fire.I love the idea of using free renewable energy and so I was very excited to try out this ingenious product from the French solar company Solar Brother. Solar Ovens take longer to cook that conventional methods, but by cooking softly and slowly, the valuable nutrients and flavours are not lost. You can set up this oven when you get to camp and leave it to do its thing while you get on with other tasks, knowing that when you are done, a tasty meal awaits. I can see this might be a great option if you live in an area where there are regular fire bans or you are not able to find fuel or if you want to keep a low profile and avoid attention from your fire’s smoke. As an emergency back-up cooking system or simply to take to the beach or on a picnic.I chose challenging conditions to try out my oven - in winter with low sun, cold temperatures and a strong wind blowing across the flat marshes where I was - a tough test for its capabilities, but I was still impressed - next time I'll try in full sun in the middle of summer where I'm sure the results will be even more impressive.I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching! Windy Beach Wild Camp in a Bivvy Bag. World Record Attempt. Colne Point on the Essex Coast. Simon, a bloke in the woods 2022-03-02 | In this video, I am exploring the stunning Colne Point spit on the Essex coast and spending a cold and windy night under the stars in a bivvy bag.The camp is part of a global world record attempt - aiming to get the most number of people sleeping under the stars in a bivvy bag at the same time and I am joining a group of wild camping and outdoor enthusiasts at this beautiful coastal spot.Before meeting up with the others, I take some time to explore the area and walk to the tip of the spit, passing a nature reserve, a nudist beach, abandoned boats, thousands of oysters scattered along the beach and enjoying delightful views across the estuary to Mersea Island, the Blackwater Estuary and Bradwell nuclear power station. Arriving at our camp spot, I meet up with the other campers taking part - a lovely bunch of people who warmly welcomed me into their group.
