A small volume of ethanol is placed into an aerated and cool bottle. After coating the walls of the bottle with the ethanol, a flame is brought near the mouth of the bottle.

The ethanol combusts, and sends a deflagration wave downwards. The expanding hot air rushes upwards and out of the bottle, creating a propulsion jet.

In theory, if a constant air flow is maintained, a continuous combustion rocket can be engineered.
