Estudio MMX and Landing Studio were two of the eight winners of the 2022 Emerging Voices competition, which recognizes North American designers with distinct voices and significant bodies of realized work.
In this video, Estudio MMX presents several projects throughout Mexico including Jojutla Central Gardens, in the village of Jojutla, Site Museum, a museum and public space in the city of Progreso, and youth arts center El Tepozán In the town of Canalejas., The founders, Jorge Arvizu, Ignacio del Río, Emmanuel Ramírez, and Diego Ricalde, shared the firm’s history and approach: to design private spaces within the public realm of the city, that rely on geometry to create order, coherence, and beauty.
Landing Studio shared a collection of five projects highlighting areas of industry and large scale infrastructure:Rock Chapel Marine & The P.O.R.T., Marginal Street Community–Industry Seam, and Infra-Space 1: Underground at Ink Block. Daniel Adams and Marie Law Adams, the firm’s founding principals, explained how their work untangles complexities of ownership and responsibility at these sites in order to more fully integrate them into the spatial, programmatic, and procedural urban fabric.
The presentation was followed by a conversation with Saidee Springall, founding partner of the Mexico City-based firm al911 and the League’s program director Anne Rieselbach, which touched on the differences between designing in Mexico and the U.S., as well as the role of maintenance in architecture.
