This skill video demonstrates how to ventilate using a power saw.

NOTE: Firefighters must note the wind direction prior to ventilation.

1. While on the ground, confirm the saw is working to ensure proper operation.
CAUTION: The saw should NOT be running while ascending to roof.

2. Sound roof with tool.

3. Locate rafters/floor joists and check roof/floor for integrity.

4. Start saw and make the following cuts.
a. First cut: Lengthwise away from firefighter, cutting from top to bottom
b. Second cut: Horizontal, top working toward firefighter
c. Third cut: Lengthwise closer to firefighter, cutting from top to bottom
d. Fourth cut: Horizontal, bottom working toward firefighter

5. Maintain secure footing while cutting.

6. Lock off saw or use chain brake.

7. Use tool to open ventilation hole.

8. Ensure effectiveness of ventilation.
