• Description:
As product photography becomes a central part of my daily activities, I've found myself needing to use a turntable for small-sized electronic components. The off-the-shelf options around are either expensive or wonky, so I decided to build one myself. For the first (quick-n-dirty) version, I decided to 3d-print a single piece that slides onto the shaft of a NEMA-17 stepper motor. For the controls, I decided to explore different firmware/hardware options.
In this video, I set up the ESP8266 to control a NEMA-17 stepper motor using a WeMos D1 Development Board and a Motor Shield. The firmware sets up a webserver that handles file uploads over HTTP (youtube.com/watch?v=QLGwI5tC9yk) and websocket communication. I use it to serve a webpage that contains a slider element that can be controlled by a user to send speed values to the websocket. Once the message is sent, the firmware uses the value to set the speed of the stepper motor.
