When Coronavirus reappeared in Vietnam, the government acted quickly. Da Nang was put under a strict lockdown once again with nobody allowed in or out of the city. With our Vietnamese visas due to expire and no guarantee of being able to stay in the country, what were we to do? We've waited until we're no longer in the country to be able to tell our story of how we managed to get out of Da Nang right when travel in and out of the city was strictly prohibited.
Despite Vietnam's excellent handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the situation of foreigners living in Vietnam has been precarious for some time. Borders have been closed and flights have been cancelled but no help is available for the foreigners who are stuck in the country due to COVID-19.
Every 3 months, we were being charged hundreds of dollars to renew our visas and get permission to stay in the country for another few months legally. However, it was not possible to get a Vietnamese visa from immigration as you might expect. Rather, we were being charged huge sums by private visa agencies since Vietnamese immigration refused to deal with foreigners directly.
With out visas due to run out and Da Nang in strict lockdown, we were in trouble. Our embassies refused to help us and so did the police. Despite this, we managed to escape Da Nang in the middle of quarantine.
