On September 11, 2001 Bill McMahon was working in his Morgan Stanley office located on the 69th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. At 8:46am, Bill noticed burning debris floating outside his office window. Remembering the drills and instructions of Rick Rescorla, Morgan Stanley's head of security, Bill and others began to evacuate the South Tower.
Making their way down the stairwell Bill and his coworkers arrived at the 44th floor sky lobby where they heard a Port Authority announcement telling them to "stay where you are". Moments later, at 9:03am United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower.
McMahon along with 2,700 other Morgan Stanley employees survived thanks to the actions of Rick Rescorla, who throughout the chaos calmly kept the evacuation process going. Rick Rescorla would last be seen on the 10th floor of the South Tower, heading upward, shortly before its collapse at 9:59 A.M.
