This mix was actually meant to release independently but before I was able to release it my good friend and colleague of the mashup community, @blancoBLK heard it and requested that it be featured on his most recent mashup album "(untitled neo-soul mashup album)". I chose "Bending My Rules" as the contender for Next Lifetime because both songs have a gentle way of addressing taboo topics of romance. BMR also has this very simple but effective vibe that just meshes so well with "Next Lifetime", I couldn't resist pairing them.
This version of the mix is actually the original version which is approximately 7 mins long. When I originally created this, I wanted to create a different type of narrative for "Next Lifetime" so when I was creating the intro sequence, I thought of films like "Set It Off", "Baby Boy", Poetic Justice" and "Waiting To Exhale", hood classics. I wanted it to give off the feel of one of those songs that gets chosen to be one of the main tracks to represent a film, i.e. "Don't Let Go" for the film "Set It Off". I did some research and found some rain and wind sound effects, and there was already a pre-existing sound of faded wind chimes playing in the acapella of Next Lifetime. Let me break down the storyline:
Picture it, early 2000s, it's a rainy and windy night, Erykah and and her good homeboy "Tyrone" (hehehehe) are sitting outside on the front porch of her house. Tyrone has been acting kind of strange all day like he wants to tell Erykah something. The rain gets heavier and the wind blows slightly harder. Tyrone starts to admit his feelings for Erykah, wind chimes swing in the background. Erykah reluctantly denies Tyrone's advances but he's insistant. The music starts to come in, Tyrone continues to peruse Erykah and while she is loyal to her current boyfriend, she can't deny that she's lowkey digging Tyrone. Erykah is touched by Tyrone's beautiful words and admits that she feels a lil awkward about it, (insert close up shot of Tyrone's face), (transition to close up shot of Erykah's face), (the camera then slowly zooms into one of Erykah's beautiful green eyes) it is at this point that the song starts and we fade into the visual representation of "Next Lifetime's Rules".
