I mentioned in a recent community post that among my Trainfest haul was a huge lot of ERTL Thomas and Friends pieces, which were provided to me for free as the person I got them from was trying to clear up some space and didn't want them anymore. Among the lot was a couple Toby's, and I came up with an idea to go Leokimvideo and try giving one of them HO/OO wheels!
I was originally planning to show how I did it in this video, but the process was so simple that I think you'll have an easy time figuring it out on your own. I grabbed some plastic wheels I had lying around (They came off of an Accurail freight car, I had swapped them out with metal ones), took apart the Toby model, and at first I was hoping they'd just drop right in, but since the axles are much fatter than that of the ERTL ones, I had to do some filing and cutting on the chassis to get them to fit properly. Thankfully, with the sideplates in mind, no one will notice when he's on the track.
If you're planning to convert ERTL models into HO runners yourself, I definitely recommend starting with Toby (Or Mavis if you have one). He's one of the easiest to do. I might try Thomas next.
