A vigorous surge of magma caused the lava lake of Erta Ale volcano (Ethiopia) to "boil over" during the afternoon and evening of 17 January 2017. Floods of lava poured over the whole rim of the lake's rim over the flanks of the lava shield inside the summit caldera of the shield volcano.
