Coming from a country where self-aggrandisement has been raised to an art form, the guitarist Ernest Ranglin is conspicuous by his modesty. Serving at various times as musical director and arranger for the likes of Studio One, Federal, and Island Records, he’s had a hand in countless crucial recordings, including Millie’s massive hit “My Boy Lollipop”. In this 1995 interview he discusses with Steve Barrow, among other things, his early days playing with Val Bennett and the Eric Deans Orchestra, his love of Bebop, and the origin of the Ska beat.

One of Jamaica’s most prolific and influential producers, Bunny Lee is well placed to takes us through the history of Jamaican music, from the early days of Tom the Great Sebastian, to the Vere Johns talent show, and the emergence of ska. He recalls his days as a radio plugger in the “dodgy business” of music and his peak producing years between 1969 and 1975, when he had a series of hits with the likes of Slim Smith and Delroy Wilson. Along the way are fascinating comments on such seminal figures as Leslie Kong, King Tubby, and U Roy. And then things get really interesting, as he explains to Steve Barrow and Don Letts how Derrick Morgan gave Bob Marley his break, the significance of Big Youth’s dreadlocks, his “Dreadlocks Dread”, and the “John Crow Skank”. All this is followed by an extended, extraordinary diatribe about how Byron Lee “tried to kill reggae”.

In this mid-90’s interview, the late, great saxophonist recalls his playing days, from the legendary Alpha Boys school, to his “apprenticeship” years in road bands, to Studio One, Beverleys and Channel One. He reminds us of the immense contribution (mostly with limited remuneration) of Jamaica’s great session men, and that the production of music was, as ever, both collaborative and competitive: “a war between the horn players…You have to be tough”. And what collaborators. He worked with many of the best, many of the true originators of ska. He names names, some familiar (Prince Buster, “The Godfather” Don Drummond), some less so. And, finally, reveals the overriding importance of the One Drop, his simple solution for remaining carefree, and, as an added bonus, blows a few classic tunes for interviewer Steve Barrow and cameramen Don Letts and Rick Elgood.

Baaba Maal is one of the finest singers in the world, and hes currently on brilliant live form - as shown by those memorable impromptu collaborations with anyone from Toumani Diabate to Franz Ferdinand at the Africa Express shows. Yet he hasnt recorded a new album for seven years, which presumably explains this limited-edition retrospective acoustic live set. Its taken from performances over the past 10 years, many featuring the exquisite kora work of the late Kaouding Cissoko, and includes some impressive tracks, from that lyrical favourite Baayo to a hypnotic, improvised workout on the harsh-edged Farba, previously only released on cassette in Africa. Then theres the gently charming, kora-backed Fanta, the well-worn and more slushy Cherie, and a virtuoso collaboration with Jamaican guitar hero Ernest Ranglin on Koni, which they performed together on Maals last live recording, nine years ago. Its currently available only on vinyl or as a download from baabamaal.tv, but is well worth checking out as we wait for something new. Those Africa Express collaborations would make a great start.

“You cannot exalt yourself” says a man whose modesty, faith and generosity of spirit are manifest in this 1995 interview. It is then, left for others to observe that the history of Jamaican music would be much poorer without the contribution of Toots and the Maytals. We start at the beginning, in Clarendon, where his church singing, he recalls, “made people joyful”. Age 13, a country boy in Trench Town, he discovers the Coptic faith. Learns the barbering trade, proceeds from singing while cutting hair to cutting dubplates (with King Edward), before coming under the tutelage of Studio One’s Coxsone Dodd. Years of chart success follow, notwithstanding a ganga bust and prison stretch (“54-46 That’s My Number”). We hear about the origin of the word reggae, the philosophical and spiritual outlook embedded in the name Maytal, and much more. Reggae historian and Blood & Fire co-founder Steve Barrow poses the questions, while D.J and filmmaker Don Letts keeps Toots in the frame and begs a coupla tunes.
