Ernest Pingoud (1887-1942) was a Finnish composer, one of three notable modernists in Finnish music of the early 20th century along with Aarre Merikanto and Väinö Raitio. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Pingoud, who was of French, German, and Finnish extraction, studied with Anton Rubinstein, Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and with Max Reger in Germany. Following the Russian Revolution, Pingoud moved permanently to Helsinki, where he also contributed to various newspapers and served in the administration of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.

Unlike many other composers of his time, Pingoud was notable (and frowned upon) for his rejection of Finnish nationalism; he never wrote a work based on the Kalevala or Finnish folk songs, instead looking to other modernist composers for inspiration. He often used elements like the Prometheus chord and the octatonic scale, giving much of his work - including the "Prologue", written in 1915 - a Scriabin-like feeling, although it is stylistically distinct.

This exciting and skillfully orchestrated work is based on an excerpt from "La Voix", part of Charles Baudelaire's poems "Les fleurs du mal"; similar Symbolist poetry inspired many modernist composers of Pingoud's time.

If you enjoyed this, I am planning to upload more score videos of music by Pingoud and his contemporaries soon - stay tuned!
