One of the repeated "bugs" I keep running into, entirely self inflicted, is forgetting to declare a global variable at the top of a #HyperTalk function or handler. Or, even better, fat-fingering a variable name, which results in an uninitialized variable being used instead of the intended variable.
Stephen C. Johnson, a computer scientist at Bell Labs, came up with the term "lint" in 1978 while debugging the yacc grammar he was writing for C. Similar to the process of capturing lint in a screen of a dryer, he wrote a program that would identify common issues with code, the lint in the code if you will.
There isn't a linter for HyperTalk. I've dug around the Intertubes and have not come up with anything like a linter. So, as I am want, I'm going to write one in HyperTalk. Let's start with something very basic to build upon.
If you are so inclined, I am often found working on my mostly text adventure game. At times I work on other things to maintain my sanity - like this linter for HyperTalk. You can find more information on Adventure! The Quack of Dawn at http://quackofdawn.com. Scheduled for release at #VCFMW in 2025.
